Avatar sequel’s opening weekend earnings ’disappointed expectations’

Walt Disney shares hit their lowest level this year after the opening weekend earnings for the new Avatar film “disappointed expectations”, according to CommSec’s Tom Piotrowski. Mr Piotrowski said Avatar: The Way of Water generated $US134 million in its opening weekend in North America, however analysts were expecting figures “significantly higher” at around $US175 million. “There are comparisons being made to the first Avatar film in 2009 which actually went on to become the highest-grossing film,” he told Sky News Australia. “It had $US77 million in its opening weekend so that’s an interesting comparison.” Presented by CommSec.
