Queensland records two new COVID cases

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says there has been two locally acquired cases of COVID-19 reported overnight. She said there was an additional COVID-19 case which was in hotel quarantine. Ms Palaszczuk said one case was linked to the aviation cluster and spent four days on the southern end Gold Coast and urged residents in the area to get tested if they have symptoms. She said the other case was acquired from interstate and was in the Queensland community for a single day. Ms Palaszczuk said “the fundamental reason” a lockdown had not been declared was because there was no unlinked community transmission. “If we do see any unlinked community transmission, I’m quite sure that Dr (Jeannette) Young will not hesitate to recommend a lockdown,” she said. from Life and Lifestyle | Lifestyle and Living | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3ohLo1Q

New Bond film finally premieres in London

The World Premiere of the 25th James Bond film has commenced in London after several delays due to production changes and the pandemic. 'No Time to Die' stars – including Daniel Craig, Rami Malek, Lea Seydoux and Naomie Harris – have attended the red carpet event at Royal Albert Hall – six years since the last 007 film, Spectre, was released. Also in attendance were the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Charles and Camilla. All guests at the event were required to show a negative COVID test before they entered the Hall. The film marks the last of those featuring actor Daniel Craig – who has played James Bond for 15 years. The film's premiere marks the largest event in the UK in several years but there were fears it would not go ahead. In August 2018, production was halted due to a change in directors, and was further postponed multiple times due to the pandemic. Mr Craig says its a huge relief to be sharing the film with the world. from Life and Lifestyle | Lifesty

‘Hypocrites’ Meghan and Harry fly home on a private jet after speaking at climate change event

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been criticised for flying home on a private jet to their California mansion after attending a star-studded event that called for more action on climate change. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke at the Global Citizen Live concert in New York where they demanded new eco laws to halve US emissions by 2030. The Sun reported the pair then flew home on a Dassault Falcon 2000 jet to their mansion in Montecito, California. “I do think this is hypocrisy. I’m sure there were plenty of scheduled flights," Royal author Penny Junor told The Sun. “I do not understand why they are behaving as if they are superstars. “His father has been known to take scheduled flights. His brother takes scheduled flights. “This totally muddies the waters of their climate message. They are shooting themselves in the foot by taking private flights.” from Life and Lifestyle | Lifestyle and Living | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3m08VBt

International travel at 80 per cent double dose: Barilaro

International travel is set to recommence once the state reaches 80 per cent double dose targets, says NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro. It comes as Premier Gladys Berejiklian will outline the government's 80 per cent vaccination roadmap at Monday's 11 am media conference. "We've made that absolutely clear," Mr Barilaro told Sky News Australia. "Absolutely – international travel at 80 per cent – we may be the first state to achieve that. ‘No question about it’: NSW on track to reopen on October 11

Deputy Premier John Barilaro says NSW is well on track to reopen on October 11, as the state ploughs ahead of estimates to reach its 70 per cent double dose vaccination target by early October. "Absolutely ... we should hit 70 per cent double dose I think around the sixth or seventh of October; and we said we will open up on the following Monday, so that will be the 11th," Mr Barilaro told Sky News Australia. "So absolutely – it's a reward for everybody who rolled up their sleeve, got the jab, and now we're going to hit that milestone – no question about it – in the first week, week and a half of October. "Which means reprieve to businesses, reprieve to families, the opportunity to have a level of freedom especially as we embark into Spring. "It's exciting. This is a great result because of the citizens of NSW who've bought into the vaccination program and got the jab." from Life and Lifestyle | Lifestyle and Living | Daily Telegraph http

Angela Merkel leaves behind legacy but remains to be judged by history

Outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel inherited a very stagnant German economy when she rose to power – now it is the fourth largest in the world, according to RMIT International Politics expert Dr Maren Klein. It comes as Germany held its national election today to decide who will replace Angela Merkel – as her time leading the nation comes to a close after 16 years. Dr Klein said Ms Merkel would be remembered for many things amid her tenure as leader of the German people. "She will also definitely be remembered for things like getting out of nuclear energy after Fukushima, she will be remembered for her, in particular, her actions in the 2015 migration crisis," she told Sky News Australia. "However, that is also one of the events that put her at odds with her own party – so it's certainly her legacy but how that's going to be judged by history – well it's history in the making we don't know yet." from Life and Lifestyle | Lifestyle and Living | Daily

Greater Geelong and Surf Coast LGA to exit lockdown

Victoria’s Deputy Chief Health Officer Deb Friedman says the city of Greater Geelong will exit lockdown alongside the Surf Coast local government area at 11:59pm tonight. “While there are still cases there and perhaps in another environment and in previous times we would have stayed in lockdown to drive those numbers down to a hard zero ... that’s no longer in line with our management of this virus under the national plan,” she said. “Today, we are reporting six cases that were in Geelong yesterday and one case in the Surf Coast.” Ms Friedman said the lack of major exposure sites and the fact many of the cases were linked to known cases were some of the factors taken into account when deciding to lift the lockdown. “We also look at high testing rates, vaccination rates and also any changes to policy that can limit further growth in the short-term, and this includes things like no travel between Melbourne and regional Victoria for construction,” she said. from Life and Lifestyle | Lif

NSW ‘galloping’ towards 70 per cent double doses

Premier Gladys Berejiklian says New South Wales is galloping towards the 70 per cent double dose target as the state passes the 85 per cent mark for first vaccinations against COVID-19. “Very pleasingly New South Wales has passed the 85 per cent figure on first doses,” Ms Berejiklian said on Sunday. “That is an outstanding result and as we literally gallop towards that 70 per cent double dose it's very pleasing to see that number go up and I’d love to see us hit that 90 per cent figure in the near future. “In terms of second doses, we just off 60 per cent, so we’re at 59.25 per cent today, and I’m hoping in the next 48 hours we’ll definitely hit that 60 per cent double dose figure which again is a wonderful achievement for New South Wales.” from Life and Lifestyle | Lifestyle and Living | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/39COVPB
